FAQ

Peak Training Center - Certified brain trainers in Portland, Oregon

All forms of neurofeedback, also called neurotherapy or neurobiofeedback, are a type of biofeedback that uses real-time displays of brain activity—most commonly electroencephalography —in an attempt to teach self-regulation of brain function.

The brain is a complex set of systems of chemical and electrical activity with about 100 billion neurons. There have been enormous advances in understanding how the brain works, but there is still much to learn. What we do know is that the brain is designed to adapt to changes in the body and our environment and function at all times. But there are many circumstances, whether genetic or environmental that alter brain function. Over time, brain function becomes dis-regulated which usually shows up as over-stimulated when it is supposed to be calm and under-stimulated when it is supposed to be attentive. When the brain cannot re-calibrate, this dis-regulated state becomes “the new normal”.

With neurofeedback training your brain can become better regulated.

The NeurOptimal® proprietary neurofeedback system is a highly personalized brain training software that prompts the central nervous system to help make the best use of your brain’s neural resources.

Neurofeedback training for the brain is similar to physical training for the body. It prompts the brain, like looking in a mirror, to return to the present moment rather than fall into less productive patterns of function. In much the same way that stopping to look in the mirror gives you the option to course-correct, NeurOptimal®’s program monitors your brain waves and then provides “feedback” to your central nervous system about what it has just done. When the software detects a tremor in your brain wave pattern, it sends an audible signal that encourages the brain to “reset” and self-correct.

In simple terms using NeurOptimal® is like having a “defrag” of your hard drive. Read more research on the benefits of NeurOptimal® neurofeedback.

Get started by completing the consultation form to meet by phone or in person with Jessica Irvine or Andrea Mia.  During this approximately 30 minute appointment we will discuss the treatment protocol, what you can expect, and discuss the general reasons you are interested in neurofeedback and the general symptoms you are hoping to address.  We will also cover in office sessions and the rental program.  There is no obligation to purchase neurofeedback sessions during this consultation, and anything discussed will be kept confidential.

At the end of this conversation, we will schedule your first session if you are interested. Paying for sessions can happen at your first appointment or online at any time before the first appointment.

Before your first appointment, you should complete client forms submit online.  If you do not have access to a computer or cannot complete the forms before the first meeting, we will make time at the beginning of your first appointment to allow you to complete the forms in our office.

At the first session, you can expect to have a follow up on your checklist to identify the items that you would most like to see shift, discuss expectations and concerns, as well as a review policies and scheduling needs. Then, we will administer the first training session. Once we attach the sensors and begin the session, we will leave you to quietly enjoy the music/visuals in a softly lit room with a weighted blanket.

After the session has finished, a trainer will return, remove the sensors and check in with to answer any questions you might have, and to schedule your next session.

Please allow an hour for the first session. Follow up appointments typically last 45 minutes.

NeurOptimal® sessions last 33 minutes.  However, please expect to attend an appointment for 45 minutes to one hour in order to review progress, allow time for sensors to be attached and detached properly and for "integration" time.
Some clients enjoy the structure of scheduled office visits, and come to view their appointments as "self care" time that they may not otherwise give themselves.  However, many of us live busy lives with unpredictable schedules that make traveling to appointments stressful.  Still others experience a few sessions in our offices and realize that family members could also benefit greatly from training, but purchased separately, this could be cost and time prohibitive.

Renting a NeurOptimal® brain training unit is a wonderful solution! You rent a machine one month at a time, and the machine comes with 20 sessions to use at home, on your schedule. Each person in your home can do up to 2 NeurOptimal® sessions per day. Need more sessions? It's simple and affordable to add more sessions when you need them, in increments of 5 or 10. If you want to keep the machine longer than one month, just notify Peak Training Center a week before the end of your contract period and we can make arrangements.

Learning to use the machine is also hassle free. If you are local, then we will schedule a training session in our office and show you how to hook up the sensors, run the program and clean up afterwards. We are also available by phone and email to help you with any questions as you go. In addition, NeurOptimal® has technical support staff who are fantastic at helping resolve any issues with the equipment quickly.

If you are not local, we can ship anywhere in the United States.  Training is conducted via skype or google hangout and we are also available to help by phone or email.
Unlike other systems, NeurOptimal® does not train states of consciousness. Indeed, it does not do anything to influence any outcome. Instead it is up to your brain to use the information it receives, or not — as it will.  Put another way, the sensors you see in photographs of our equipment are only listening to the brain - not putting in any information, electricity or anything else.

For this reason, NeurOptimal® is an extraordinarily safe tool for self-optimization. It is safe to use with very young children to very aged adults and every age between.

A note about conductive paste:  it is rare, but there are some individuals who report a mild rash or itch when using the conductive paste that helps the sensors listen to brain activity.  If you have concerns about skin allergies, please discuss this with your trainer prior to starting any session.
NeurOptimal® does not require a medical or psychological diagnosis for use, so it does not cure any condition.  NeurOptimal® is approved by the FDA as a wellness device and not a medical device.  That said, most users experience shifts in any number of areas of their life from experiencing greater focus and mental clarity, a reduction in headaches or tinnitus, relief from anxiety symptoms, a reduction in food cravings and so on.

We recommend 20 sessions to give your brain enough exposure to NeurOptimal® so that it can "learn" a new way to process and function.  But we cannot stress strongly enough that this is not a cure or treatment for any condition.
Using NeurOptimal® enough times so that your brain learns is similar to learning to read. Once you have done say 20 sessions, there appears to be a lasting effect. But if you get thrown off by something happening in your life, a session or two or three can get you right back. You can also stop training any time you want, and pick back up again later. It’s really up to you.

NeurOptimal® can also be considered an ongoing self-care practice like regular exercise. We are living tissue after all, and daily life stressors and pollution all take their toll. You might want to run yourself weekly or monthly to stay tuned — it’s really up to you. It’s your brain doing the training after all. It will let you know when it wants a session!

Especially in the early stages of training, the more frequently you can schedule sessions, the better.  That said, we understand how challenging it can be to travel for an appointment once, twice or even three times in one week.  That's why renting a unit is the best way to get sessions every day or every few days.

As the brain becomes more efficient and effects begin to integrate, the pace can be slowed to once per week, or even every other week as your schedule allows.
